Exynos 990

Samsung has launched Exynos 990 processor at Samsung Tech Day in San Jose, California. The company says the processor features an embedded ARM Mali-G77 GPU and a new 5G modem called the Exynos Modem 5123. It will be the chipset that will power Galaxy S11 series that will be launched next year. Samsung plans to mass produce the processor and modem by the end of this year

As per Samsung, the processor is fabricated using 7nm Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) process. It has two custom cores paired with Cortex A76 cores and four power-efficient Cortex A55 cores. The processor will be a competition to Huawei Kirin 990, Apple A13 Bionic and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor.

Boosts the performance by 20 percent

Samsung claims the processor boosts the performance of a device by 20 percent with the tri-cluster CPU architecture. The ARM Mali-G77 GPU based on the Valhall architecture brings 20 percent power efficiency says Samsung.

The chip is likely to be paired with 5G Exynos Modem 5123 when it will be used in smartphones from next year. This modem supports various spectrums and comes as a solution for all networksas per Samsung. It brings up to eight- carrier aggregation (8CA) and a maximum downlink speed of up to 5.1Gbps in sub-6GHz.

Download speed of up to 3Gbps

The modem can have a download speed of up to 3Gbps and supports higher-order 1024 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM). As per Samsung, the modem has a memory bandwidth with (Low-Power Double-Data-Rate) LPDDR5 data rates of up to 5,500 megabits per second (Mb/s).
