Dubbed Galaxy Fold, it features a 7.3-inch flex display which can be folded into a compact device
Korea-based Samsung has announced its first foldable device ahead of the upcoming Mobile World Congress. The brand claims that the device has been developed over eight years, following the debut of its first flexible display prototype in 2011.
An official statement released by the company read, “The world’s first Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display, endless multitasking possibilities and our most versatile camera yet – in one breakthrough device.”
DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT and mobile communications division, Samsung Electronics said, “We created Galaxy Fold for those that want to experience what a premium foldable device can do, beyond the limitations of a traditional smartphone.”
It is worth mentioning here that brands including the likes of LG, Samsung, Oppo and several others were locked in a cold battle to launch the first foldable device in the world. Samsung may have won the official unveiling game but it is expected that a lot of other consumer electronic brands will showcase foldable devices at the upcoming MWC 2019.
Samsung Galaxy Fold features
The company is claiming that its first foldable smartphone is a category of its own. Company’s official statement read, “The internal screen does not merely bend. It folds. Folding is a more intuitive motion, and a more difficult innovation to deliver. Samsung invented a new polymer layer and created a display around 50 per cent thinner than the typical smartphone display.”
Samsung said that it has engineered a sophisticated hinge with multiple interlocking gears. This system is housed in a hidden enclosure. The brand has used two batteries in the smartphone. Galaxy Fold smartphone is based on Android Pie. It is powered by a 12 GB RAM coupled with 512 GB ROM.
Galaxy Fold smartphone features six camera lenses—three in the back, two on the inside and one on the cover. The camera on the cover is 10 MP lens with F2.2 aperture. The rear triple camera setup on the device includes a 16 MP ultra wide camera, a 12 MP wide-angle camera and a 12 MP telephoto camera. The dual front camera setup features a 10 MP selfie camera and a 8 MP RGB depth camera.
Koh added, “Today, Samsung is writing the next chapter in mobile innovation history by changing what’s possible in a smartphone. Galaxy Fold introduces a completely new category that unlocks new capabilities never seen before with our Infinity Flex Display.”
