- Competitors like Tata Motors and MG Motors will also launch electric cars in India soon
- After catering to mass segment, Renault will also make high-end EVs
According to a report by Livemint, French vehicle manufacturer Renault will launch its first electric vehicle in India by 2022. The company will focus on electric vehicles targeted for the mass segment in India.
The report further mentions that the launch will happen only if sufficient support is given by the government to the electric vehicles segment according to a senior executive of the company.
The government has recently sanctioned Rs 10,000 crore for the second phase of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid vehicles (FAME) scheme. It subsidises the cost of manufacturing EVs and lithium-ion battery manufacturing plants and charging stations.
More focus on EV ecosystem
The report mentions that Venkatram Mamillapalle, country chief executive officer and managing director, Renault India has said the work on EVs has already started. A team in Paris is helping in developing the ecosystem for the product according to him. He also says the company is focussing more on the ecosystem than on bringing an EV car to India.
Th report further mentions that Mamillapalle has said that Renault will also bring “halo” or high-end products in the EV category to show their capability in electric vehicles.
Tata Nexon EV in 2020
Tata Motors has also announced that it will launch Tata Nexon EV in the fourth quarter financial year 2019-20. It is expected that Tata Motors will sell the Nexon EV in the price range of Rs 15 lakh to Rs17 lakh.
Tata Motors said Nexon EV will be equipped with a high voltage system and come with fast charging feature. It will have IP67 standards making it dust and waterproof. It is expected that the Nexon EV will have a range of 300km. The company will offer an eight-year warranty on the battery and motor. The Ziptron technology will use regenerative braking to charge the battery while is on drive mode.
Updated version of Tigor EV
Recently, Tata Motors has also launched the updated version of Tigor EV in India. The company will sell the electric car in three variants XE+, XM+ and XT+. Tata Motors will make the newly launched car available at a starting price of Rs 9.44 lakh.
For private buyers, the car is available at a starting price of Rs 13.09 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and Rs 12.59 lakh (ex-showroom, India). MG Motors is also launching the MG ZS EV in December of this year.
