- Xiaomi CEO said 5G upgradation is needed as 4G phones may not sell from next year

According to a report by Reuters, Xiaomi will launch 10 new smartphones enabled with 5G support next year. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said this at the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, China.
Xiaomi has recently launched two 5G smartphones Mi 9 Pro 5G and Mi Mix 3 5G this year. The report also says that these smartphones will be launched by Xiaomi in China as it is already ready for 5G deployment.
Premium, mid and low range
Jun also said the 5G smartphones will not only be in the premium range but also in the mid and low-end segments. The Mi 9 Pro 5G recently launched has seen a good demand.
The report also says that Jun has said that from next year 4G models may not sell. The upgrade to 5G will be a necessity. He also mentioned that he hoped that operators will be able to speed up their expansion of 5G base stations.
Qualcomm will incorporate support for 5G connectivity too
Qualcomm has also announced that it will incorporate support for 5G connectivity on its midrange Snapdragon chipsets by 2020. The company also said it will expand 5G support to more chipsets under the Snapdragon 800-series, 700-series and 600-series by next year.
The company said Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs) like HMD, Redmi, Realme, Oppo, Vivo, LG and Motorola will launch phones with the 5G-powered processors. These chips are likely to be built on 7nm process nodes with integrated 5G support.
Realme has recently confirmed it will be the first OEM to release a smartphone with Qualcomm’s upcoming integrated 5G chipsets. Realme says the upcoming smartphone with integrated 5G Qualcomm chipset will most likely be powered by Snapdragon 700 series with Qualcomm elite gaming and AI engine.
