A report published by Bloomberg also claims that the e-commerce giant is actively looking for parts suppliers and manufacturing partners for its upcoming Apple iPod’s rivals
Amazon’s Lab 126 is reportedly working on developing Apple iPod rivals. A report published in the Bloomberg claims that the company has faced numerous delays in the project. Once developed, the Amazon Alexa earbuds will become the first smart wearable offered by the e-commerce giant in the world.
Smart wearable devices market
The worldwide shipments of wearable devices, as per a recent report by Gartner, is expected to reach 225 million in 2019. Gartner also forecast that the end-user spending on wearable devices will reach $42 billion in 2019.
Gartner’s report further said that by 2022, ear-worn devices’ will replace smartwatches’ in terms of highest smart device shipments. Ear-worn devices shipments may amount to 158 million units which is 43 million more units than the expected 115 million smartwatch shipments expected in 2022.
Gartner’s report read, “Future generations of ear-worn devices will be able to accommodate virtual personal assistants and subsequently be used for a multitude of tasks such as queries and hands-free directions. Moving forward, advanced ear-worn devices can reduce smartphone use, as they will take over many tasks that users solve with the help of their smartphones today.”
Interestingly, the first wearable by Amazon, is also expected to come equipped with companies virtual assistant Alexa and a whole lot of smart features. The Amazon earbuds, as per the Bloomberg report, will offer gesture controls for things varying from taking to skipping tracks while listening to music.
Smart wearable devices Market in India
The shipments of smart wearables in India reached 102,000 units in the third quarter of this year, recording a double-digit growth consecutively for two quarters. This is the first quarter when smart wearables shipment crossed the 100,000 units mark, according to the latest data by the market intelligence and advisory firm International Data Corporation (IDC).
In the third quarter of 2018, the total wearables market in India recorded a growth of 17 per cent year-on-year as vendors shipped 897,000 units in the country. However, the overall shipments dropped by 11 per cent in third quarter as compared to the previous quarter, majorly due to double-digit drop in the basic wearables.
Once launched, India can be on the radar for Amazon, as the smart wearables penetration is increasing at a very fast pace in the country. Apart from that, India’s population in the Urban areas might also prove to be a big market for Amazon. It already sales its portfolio of smart speakers in the country.
