Oppo to invest $1.43 billion in Research and Development in 2019

Oppo is striving to launch the first 5G smartphone in the world. It will also be developing a range of smart devices, including smart watches and smart home technologies

China based smartphone maker Oppo has announced that it will be dedicating an amount of $1.43 billion (10 billion yuan) for Research and Development across its global markets in 2019. The focus will be on integrating supply chain and building expertise in order to enhance technological capabilities.

A tweet made through Oppo’s official Twitter handle said, “To say we’re excited for 2019 is an understatement. Tony Chen, Founder and CEO of Oppo announced an increase in R&D spending to RMB 10 billion, building on technical expertise and to meet demands of consumers in the age of AI and IoT.”

Tony Chen, founder and CEO, Oppo, said, “In the future, smartphones will become intelligent personal assistants – and this is something OPPO will definitely enable. The smartphone is one of the best vessels for AI, but there is still considerable room for improvement. OPPO will actively embrace artificial intelligence while dedicating focus and resources to cutting-edge AI technologies and applications.”

The big announcement was made during the “2018 Oppo Technology Exhibition”.

Focus on building smart devices

Chen said, “In the future, smartphones will become intelligent personal assistants – and this is something Oppo will definitely enable. The smartphone is one of the best vessels for AI, but there is still considerable room for improvement. Oppo will actively embrace artificial intelligence while dedicating focus and resources to cutting-edge AI technologies and applications.”

The brand operating under the BBK umbrella said that it will be leveraging the power of AI to develop a range of smart devices, including smart watches and smart home technologies. These new smart devices will be developed to meet the increasingly rigid demands of consumers in the age of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Chen continued, “We must dare to explore, dare to make breakthroughs and dare to innovate. In the future, Oppo will fully integrate technological innovation with art and humanity, to develop smart devices and smart homes with the smartphone at their core, and an underlying mission of continuing to meet people’s expectations for a better life.”

Oppo’s stand on 5G smartphones

The brand is planning to be the first manufacturer to launch 5G smartphones in the world. It will also be exploring application opportunities in the 5G arena. Oppo is believed to working on 5G from as early as 2015.

Chen explained, “5G is a trend Oppo must embrace. In addition to striving to become the first manufacturer to launch 5G smartphones, Oppo’s exploration of application opportunities in the 5G+ era will ultimately determine the value of 5G. Oppo will fully integrate 5G with applications and user insights, and continuously innovate to provide users with revolutionary, necessary, convenient and seamless experiences.”

Oppo was the first brand to launch smartphones with 5MP and 16MP front cameras. It was also the first brand to introduce the motorized rotating camera, the Ultra HD feature and the 5x Dual Camera Zoom technology.
