According to a report by GSMArena, Apple is all set to order 45 million OLED screens from Chinese display producer BOE starting next year. The company plans to use them for 2021’s iPhone.
The report also highlighted that BOE will become Apple’s second-largest supplier of OLED panels after Samsung which fulfills the bulk of Apple’s OLED needs.
To avoid dependence on a sole supplier
It is to be noted here that Apple used only Samsung for OLED displays but to avoid dependence on a sole supplier Apple added LG Display in 2018.
Additionally, Samsung Display will be the sole supplier of the 2020 Apple iPhone line-up that will come with an on-cell touch OLED panel, which is called ‘Y-OCTA’ technology and is supplied to Samsung Electronics for its own smartphones, the report said.
A representative for the industry informed that Although Apple had been sticking with the film touch method since its first iPhone, Samsung Display has succeeded in drawing a change from Apple by actively promoting Y-OCTA technology to Apple.
He further stated that Samsung Display also suggested shocking terms in order to obtain an order from Apple.
