Amidst Rising Competition, Mi Signs Ranveer Singh as Brand Ambassador

Ranveer Singh’s wife, Deepika Padukone, is often seen promoting Oppo smartphones in TV commercials. Samsung M30, Realme 3 and Xiaomi Note 7 will be launched in March 2019.

Xiaomi India has signed Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh as its brand ambassador in the country. Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi India head, took to Twitter to announce the same. He also posted video a TV commercial advertisement featuring the Bollywood star with Xiaomi’s upcoming Note 7 smartphone.

Manu tweeted, “My main man, Ranveer. Of course, we are on. We are on like donkey kong! India’s No. 1 star is with India’s No. 1 smartphone brand.”

This is for the first time that Xiaomi has signed up with a big Bollywood star in the country. The company, till now, has been relying upon is social media handles and word of mouth publicity in India.

Interestingly, Xiaomi’s upcoming Note 7 smartphone is slated to be launched in the first week of March in India. Samsung and Realme are also planning to launch M30 and Realme 3 smartphones during the same time in the country. Once launched, Samsung M30, Realme 3 and Xiaomi Note 7 will compete for bigger market shares.

Ranveer Singh also took to his social media accounts and posted, “Got me a sexy new phone! Watch this space!.” He has not officially announced his association with the brand. However, Xiaomi’s TV commercial featuring Note 7 smartphone and Ranveer Singh is already out.

Interestingly, Ranveer’s wife, Deepika Padukone, has been seen promoting Oppo smartphones in various TV commercials. Aamir Khan, another Bollywood superstar, is the brand ambassador for Vivo smartphones in India.

Xiaomi’s Journey so far in India

Xiaomi is counted in the top five smartphones in India. Several reports by various research companies have said that it was the number one smartphone in the country in 2018.

One of IDC’s recent reports read, “Xiaomi continued to dominate, growing YoY by 28.6 per cent in 2018Q4 on back of its affordable Redmi series devices aided by high decibel marketing campaigns and offline expansion with its Mi preferred-partner program and opening of rural stores. Xiaomi’s Redmi 5A and Redmi Note 5/Pro series emerged as the fastest selling devices of 2018 across brands, driving 10 million shipments each in the entire year. The brand continued to lead in the online channel with a share of 47.2 per cent, climbing to the second slot in the offline channel by surpassing Vivo in 2018Q4.”

Counterpoint’s recent report highlighting the quarter-wise shipments by various smartphone companies read, “In the smartphone segment, Xiaomi recorded its highest ever shipments in India in a single quarter driven by the new Redmi 6 series and expansion in offline channels.”

It is to be noted here that the China-based brand is now facing tough competition in the Indian smartphone market owing to recent M-Series smartphone launches by Korea-based Samsung. Huawei, with its sub-brand Honor, has also started focusing on the affordable smartphone segment in the country. Realme is also in its offline expansion phase in India.
