- Mi said it sold 1.5 million devices during the first few hours of Amazon and Flipkart sales
- Amazon said that 91 per cent of new customers are from Tier II, Tier III and smaller towns
- Large appliances & TVs saw record sales over the 36 hours with nearly 10X growth
Flipkart and Amazon started have started festive sales in India. Both the e-commerce giants are trying to capture bigger market share than each other. While the two e-commerce players retail almost every consumer category through websites, consumer electronics always end up among the categories that sale most via these channels.
Xiaomi, a China-based consumer electronics brand, announced that it was able to sell more than 1.5 million devices within a few hours of Amazon and Flipkart’s festive sales. Manu Kumar Jain, global VP, Mi took to Twitter to announce the development and also thanked consumers.
One of his tweets read, “Breaking news: Xiaomi India has sold 1.5M+ devices in first few hours of sale across Mi website, Amazon and Flipkart. This is smartphones, Mi TV and IoT ecosystem products,majority being smartphones! It means 10 devices sold per second.”

Company’s official statement read, “Amazon India continued to see great customer response in key categories – premium smartphone brands OnePlus, Samsung and Apple made record sales worth about Rs 750 crores in 36 hours and large appliances & TVs showed a growth of nearly 10X over an average business day.”
Consumer electronics among the largest selling categories in 2018
Consumer electronics and smartphones were among the largest selling categories across Flipkart and Amazon during last year’s festive sales period. Amazon India and Flipkart, as per a report in the Economic Times had cumulatively generated Rs 15,000 crore sales in approximately five days sales last Diwali.
Walmart-backed Flipkart said that it had covered 75 per cent share in large appliances category during the sales last year. Flipkart ahs also mentioned that every three-in-four smartphones bought between 10 to 15 October 2019 in India were through Flipkart.
Amazon India, this year, has partnered with hundreds of brands, enabled over 500,000 sellers to sell on Amazon, and expanded fulfillment footprint with more than 50 fulfillment centres in 13 states offering a storage capacity of over 20 million cubic feet. The company said that 91 per cent of new customers were from Tier II and Tier III cities. Largest number of new customers on Amazon India shopped for fashion, smartphones and groceries.

Echo Devices, as per Amazon, saw 4x in the last 36 hours compared to previous year . Customers showed keen interest in smart-home products, and the number of customers who bought smart lights with Echo was 10X more than last year. Customers enjoyed offers on Fire TV Stick and it was once again among the highest selling deals with 50X increase in sales over an average business day.
Brands announcing offers
Almost every consumer electronics and smartphone brand has announced different offers for online and offline channels. While Samsung India, along with other offers, has also announced discounted prices for its premium TVs, the company has also launched its smartphone finace program in the country.
Similarly the likes of Huawei, TCL, Kodak, Thomson, Realme among others have also started retailing their line of products at discounted prices. Huawei has announced separate offers for Amazon, Flipkart and offline channel. Kodak, Thomson and TCL are trying to make this season big through the online channel.
Sharp India, which launched a plethora of home and kitchen appliances after a long gap, shared that it was aiming at Rs 70 crore revenues from festive sales this year. Kishley Ray, president, Sharp India, recently told EFy Group, “We are expecting 50 per cent growth in the sales this year. While sharing a definite number will be difficult at the moment, all I can say is we aim to at least retail consumer electronics worth Rs 70 crores in the country.”
