- A BIS notification had brought kitchen appliances under a quality control policy starting December 2018
- As many as 35 kitchen appliances makers are located in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh
The manufacturers of kitchen appliances have been operating under cloudy business conditions from May 2019. BIS (Bureau of India Standards) has not given these companies any extension on the notification it had circulated in December 2018.
This certification, had made it to necessary for kitchen appliance manufacturers to fall under the ambit of quality control in India. BIS had allocated six months time, starting December 2018, to these companies for sample submission, testing of products through the BIS-approved labs, site inspection and issuance of licences.
June 19 emergency meeting
A report published by the Tribune said that these manufacturers are now looking forward to the June 19 meeting. The report further said that this meeting is being called an emergency meeting in the area.
Scheduled to be held in Delhi, it is believed that many of these manufacturers will be meeting BIS officials in Delhi on this date. It is to be noted here that standards notified for kitchen appliances like juicer mixers and blenders have not been revised from a long time now.
A big blow to the business
While kitchen appliances sell through the season in India, April to September period is considered as the prime season for kitchen appliances makers in the country. And as, these manufacturing plants have not been operating since May 2019, they might not have the inventory to send to dealers and distributors.
As per a report by Research and Markets, the cooking appliances market accounted for 7.2 per cent of the ACE market value in FY2018. The report read, “Increase in consumer appliances market in the country has boded well for the kitchen appliances market, where products made specifically for the Indian market are expected to have higher sales. The kitchen appliances market will grow at a faster rate than the overall ACE market. Indian consumers are inherently price conscious.”
